2019 in numbers

our year in review.

Mobilizing 3.5% of the population means getting 354,157 Angelenos on the streets come 2021. Our goal: recruit, train, and partner with 3,542 leaders. Take a look below to see how we’re doing.

our influence in los angeles in 2019

  • No New Gas Plants

Mayor Garcetti announced there would be no new natural gas plants and LADWP will not repower the Scattergood, Haynes & Harbor gas power plants. He also stated he plans for LA to be coal-free by 2025, reduce greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2025, close the Aliso and Playa del Rey gas storage fields, and invest $100 million towards energy efficiency projects.

  • Green New Deal Town Hall

  • First Sunrise LA Training

  • Green New Deal Roadshow

We helped organize and put on the GND Roadshow LA stop with nearly 1000 community members in attendance. Varshini Prakash, co-founder & executive director of Sunrise, along with Maro Kakoussian of STAND-LA, co-hosted the evening. We heard rousing speeches from both local and national environmental, indigenous, union and front-line community activists. The night concluded with a surprise appearance from Senator Ed Markey. He gave an impassioned cry for why he co-introduced the Green New Deal resolution with Congresswoman AOC.

  • Full Project Launch

We won in Glendale! The City Council unanimously moved to postpone their decision on Grayson to 2022, which essentially means new gas there is dead in the water for now.

  • Debate Watch Parties

After pushing for months, the climate crisis was mentioned for the first time in the presidential debate. We organized five presidential debate watch parties throughout Los Angeles.

  • West Coast Summit

  • Eland Solar & Storage Center

We rallied to demand a just transition to clean energy. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s appointees on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Board of Commission unanimously voted to approve power purchase agreements for the Eland Solar and Storage Center, the largest solar and battery energy storage system in the United States. The agreements are subject to City Council approval.

  • Global Climate Strike

Two-thousand people marched downtown for the Global Climate Strike. Four million participated internationally.

  • Aliso Action

  • Youth Climate Strike with Greta Thunberg

  • LAUSD 100% Renewable

A vote by the LAUSD's board members put the country's second largest school district on the path to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2030. The district's resolution also plans to transition all other energy such as cooking and transportation to renewable energy by 2040.
