HUB STRUCTURE

You have the power.

We Maintain a Horizontal Structure

Sunrise LA has a distributed leadership model that relies on the participation of our members (whether you can give 5 mins a week or 40 hours) to succeed.  When everybody actively plugs in and gives what they can, our movement thrives!

It only takes three people to make a decision in the name of Sunrise, including starting a new project within the hub! Our movement is stronger when we empower everyone to participate in leadership.

We Reject Top-Down Leadership.

The role of a leader is not to single-handedly shape any project or team, but to empower others to come together in taking action towards a shared goal.

Having distributed leadership therefor requires active communication, and a foundation of shared strategy and values. Learn more about our decision making process here.

Our Building a Just Hub Guide underpins our priorities, including our movement’s need to center Black and Indigenous voices and youth of color.

PROJECT TEAMS

Project teams are the main space for leadership within the hub. They work on a specific initiative, action, campaign, or task that furthers hub needs and shared strategy, and is in alignment with the hub’s values / guidelines.

Project teams work to carry out the hub’s strategy, which is reviewed every six months at a hub strategy retreat. Project team’s efforts work to address internal needs of the hub, and build the hub’s power externally. They can be used to promote anti-oppression efforts within the hub, hold trainings, or plan direct actions.

All project teams should be able to articulate a clear plan and goal for their team, and meet regularly to reach the teams’ goals.

SUPPORT TEAMS

Support Teams help manage the basic operations of the hub (like this website), ensuring a foundation of support continually exists for project teams to do their work.

STRATEGY RETREATS

Held once every ~6 months to engage the full membership in determining internal and external strategy and priorities for the hub, rooted in Sunrise’s principles and with an emphasis on anti-racism.

Not ready to commit?

There are many avenues to get involved in Sunrise, and there are different degrees of involvement you can have. Being involved doesn’t require you to join a team - you can attend individual events, take action online, or simply join our email list to stay updated.

Our weekly House Meetings are a great first way to learn about what’s happening in the hub - without any hard commitments.
